GARIFUNA PERFORMANCES by MARK WELCH

A Belizean born artists, rooted in the Garifuna and Creole Culture…has performed, through out Central America, southern USA at festivals and retreat!


Mark brings traditional ceremonial Garifuna arrangements and performs the popular blended “Punta” rhythms and songs! Drummer and singer he perform original piece and remixed sets from the strong “Niabingi” beats of the elders to the high energy rhythms of the “Punta”!

 

He performances are high energy, captivating and engaging… as he weaves tales of his people's journey through each rhythm and song…rooted in Africa the Garifuna people travel through the rhythms and drums of the Caribbean!

 

Mark brings these tales to life through his interactive show, where in the relations of drummer and dancers are present…audience members are encouraged…to get up and dance, sharing the stage brings energy to rhythms!

DRUM MAKING WORKSHOP

Mark Welch, Belizean born artist rooted in the Garifuna and Creole Culture…founded mc Caribbean Drums over a decade ago.  Master Drum maker, Mark has been making traditional Garifuna, Primero and Segunda drums as well as Djembé drums for an international market. You will find his handmade crafted with original artwork drums around the globe! His attention to detail brings each drum to life from natural materials. Mark presents drum-making demonstrations and now offers workshops sharing his master craft with you!

 

Mark prepares each drum making kit; he will guide you through the steps of assembling your very own one-of-a-kind drum!

 

DRUM MAKING MATERIALS

Mahogany logs and a selection of local wood logs are prepared, ready you to add your art works!

 

 

Each log is hollow, sanded, shaped, and treated with linseed oil to make the base of the drum shell.
Garifuna drums shells have the rope holes pre-drilled.
The goatskin, used for the head of the drum is washed, naturally treated. The drumhead is pre-shaped to the rim of the drumhead and ready to assemble on your drum shell.

 
  • 1 drum shell form a mahogany log or local wood log
  • 1 naturally treated/shaved/pre-shaped goat skin
  • Hemp/other ropes used for tuning rope/shoulder strap
  • Tuning pegs (Garifuna drums only)
  • 2 Pre-shaped rims
  • Nylon string ( Garifuna drums only – optional)

 

DRUM MAKING STEPS

Drum Art: design artwork and carve on exterior of shell
Drum Head: place skin on drumhead,
Drum Making: attached to the rim, and begin the roping
Drum Tuning: prepare and insert tuning pegs in rope
Drum Culture: attached the nylon strings across the top (optional)
Drum Playing: allow skin to dry and form…then jam away!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Join Angela award winning artist-educator and Mark Belizean-Garifuna Artist-Drum maker as they guide you through an interactive and captivating celebration! Story that bring a drum to life! The tale is told the drum is made, be part of this journey with the drum through songs and rhythms…followed by a procession by the children! Hand drums (some made by Mark) and percussion instruments provided for children on a collective and our voice and hands create amazing rhythms too!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Mark Belizean-Garifuna drummer/drum maker and Angela award winning artist-educator will guide you through an interactive fusion of rhythms & vocal arts!  A variety of world percussion instruments and drums provided. Learn basic Djembé and Garifuna drumming techniques, blend rhythms from around the globe into a sound mosaic of polyrhythm. We will guide you through basic techniques & beats, then open up the space for free style vibes!  A collective experience, part fusion…where rhythms interact with chants!   Now bring in the dancers of free form expression…dancers evoke a high-energy response, as drummers hand are dancing too!


An amazing community celebrations…a sound and movement mosaic…shares the power of the drum!

Empowering Community Performance
This session may lead into a participant-based performance for any event, festival, convention, retreat… Rhythm and drum is about the people who created the community. At the end of a workshop, we are ready to show case a 10 to 20min performance set of rhythms and songs…inspiring and empowering experience for all!
