MERCHANDISE
Garifuna drum
Carved from a single mahogany log, covered with a single membrane of goat or dear skin stretched over it. There are tuning pegs on the exterior inserted between the ropes, which connect to the rim. On the top of the drum, three guitar strings or fish line, which produce a unique vibration sound. The use of metal or nylon cords stretched tightly across the face of the head of each drum creates a buzzing or rattling timbre.
Primero
A single headed drum. It is the tenor or lead drum within a traditional ensemble, directs and is the smaller of the two Garifuna drums. The Primero indicates rhythmic musical changes and calls the songs for the others’ response with the lead singer or “Gayusa”. The drums are played with the full hand across the head. The trick is to be able to play fast while keeping the tone strong.

Segunda

Similar to the Primero, but larger in diameter and is carved from a single mahogany log. It is covered with a single membrane of goat or dear skin. There are tuning pegs on the exterior inserted between the ropes, which connect to the rim. On the Segunda (the bass drum), the drummer repeats a single duple-meter ostinato throughout the song. This functions as the characteristic rhythmic foundation of all “Punta” rhythms against which the Primero drums combine numerous contrasting rhythmic motives in a repetitive manner. This unique feature makes it the preferred aural aesthetic of Garifuna drumming and beyond simply a matter of tradition.

Djembe

The drum shell, carved from a single mahogany log. Mortar-shaped, has a single membrane of goat or antelope skin stretched over the top. Hand drum that produces three sounds, slap, tone, and base.
